At Beyond Disability Supports, we believe in fostering a world where everyone can live with dignity, respect, and safety. Our mission has always been to empower individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities to live more independently and achieve their goals. In line with this mission, we unequivocally stand against domestic violence in any form and are committed to ensuring that our participants feel safe and supported at all times.

 Understanding Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is a pervasive issue that affects individuals across all demographics, including those with disabilities. It encompasses various forms of abuse, each of which can have devastating effects on the victim. The different types of domestic violence include:

– Physical Abuse: This includes any form of physical harm, such as hitting, slapping, choking, or using weapons. Physical abuse can lead to severe injuries and long-term health issues.

– *Emotional and Psychological Abuse*: This type of abuse involves behaviours that undermine an individual’s self-worth, such as constant criticism, humiliation, manipulation, and threats. Emotional and psychological abuse can lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.

– *Sexual Abuse*: This includes any non-consensual sexual activity, ranging from unwanted touching to rape. Sexual abuse can have profound physical and psychological consequences.

– *Financial Abuse*: This occurs when an abuser controls or misuses the victim’s financial resources, restricting their access to money or preventing them from working. Financial abuse can leave victims financially dependent and unable to leave abusive situations.

– *Coercive Control*: A form of psychological abuse, coercive control involves a pattern of behaviours that dominate and isolate the victim. This can include monitoring their activities, controlling their daily life, restricting their contact with others, and creating an atmosphere of fear.

Our Commitment

At Beyond Disability Supports, we are dedicated to creating a safe and nurturing environment for all our participants. We take a firm stance against domestic violence and do not support or condone any form of abuse. Our commitment to safety and dignity is reflected in every aspect of our services:

– *Safe Spaces*: Our respite home and Supported Independent Living (SIL) facilities are designed to be safe havens where participants can feel secure and valued. We ensure that these spaces are free from any form of violence or abuse.

– *Trained Staff*: Our team of support workers are trained to recognize the signs of domestic violence and respond appropriately. We trust that they are equipped with the knowledge and skills to provide compassionate support and connect participants with necessary resources.

– *Supportive Community*: We foster a community where participants can build trusting relationships and feel supported. Our small group activities and community support services are designed to promote positive social interactions and a sense of belonging.

– *Access to Resources*: We work with local organisations and agencies that specialise in domestic violence support. This collaboration ensures that our participants have access to comprehensive resources, including legal assistance, counselling, and emergency housing.

Raising Awareness

Beyond Disability Supports is committed to raising awareness about domestic violence and its impact on individuals with disabilities. By educating our community and advocating for change, we aim to break the cycle of abuse and create a safer, more inclusive society. We encourage open conversations about domestic violence and provide educational materials to help participants and their families understand their rights and the resources available to them.
